Flash Game Review: Shadow

In short, Shadow is a point and click escape puzzle game by Kotoronisu. The premise is that you are trapped in a room and you have to get out, throughout the room there are cryptic messages and clues that help you solve the various puzzles.

In shorter, this game is extremely hard, and I spent 2 hours trying to figure out one of the puzzles, luckily you can save.

A Tip, some things only become clickable after you read the hint that leads to them or you solve a previous puzzle, this was frustrating at times but overall, It was enjoyable.

Now to lie down to get rid of this headache.

Cowboys & Aliens: Back In Your Hole!

Finally, after much anticipation, Cowboys & Aliens has finally made its way into the box office. With big names like Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig backing up the combination of A-list and B-list cast, this movie dares to walk with a big stick; whether the film itself is capable of wielding said stick is for you to decide.

The film starts off just like the trailers portray it: a cowboy wakes up in the middle of nowhere, has no idea who he is, and has a mysterious metal wristband on his arm. After making his way into town and undergoing several different conflicts with, both, idiots with guns and the authority of the town he encounters his first alien attack, warding off the last ship in the region with this arm band laser gun. This process takes up about twenty to thirty minutes and feels a tad bit drawn out due to the large number of times I have seen the same parts played out via the actual trailer.

I Am Stamos

No, that isn't a typo - this is not a review for the summer 2011 film "I am Number 4" but rather another short film found in the bowels of the internet. Where this deserves to stay.

The film begins with a pretty interesting idea, what if the guy that usually plays the bumbling idiot gets to be the big star for once in his life. Then it takes that idea behind the shed, holds it down, and makes it eat its spit. Andy is, like most people in California not smoking all of the legal weed they can get their hands on, trying to make it big. He has had several roles allowing him a foot in the door but he is always casted as the bumbling idiot. On the day that he decides to tell the producer of his biggest opportunity to forcibly insert the role up his anus - coinciding perfectly with Andy's birthday, he is magically turned into Bob Saget's bitch . . . . John Stamos.

Vindictus: BTLN Review

Vindictus is a F2P (free to play) hack 'n slash MMORPG that, put simply, is actually worth the effort of playing. Nexon's games tend to be rather hit and miss, while carrying a long standing tradition of grinding. Vindictus takes their standard formula and brings it to a whole new level. As Vindictus hit the states last October, this is a BTLN (Better Late Than Never) review.

Ten for Grandpa.

I was originally going to write a review for the newest Luna Lovegood . . . I mean Harry Potter movie, but I felt like that would be boring. So instead I decided to fluff my hipster ego by reviewing a short indie film that no one has heard of.

I've posted a link containing the entire video for the sole fact that I doubt very many have seen it. The video follows Doug Karr as he questions his grandfather, David Karr (A player on the world stage during the Red Scare post World War 2), well Doug is posing his questions to a ghost seeing as his grandpa died a month before his birth.

The 10 questions begin simply enough, questioning David's multiple marriages, and with building suspense - each question digging deeper into his life as a writer for the USA Communist newspaper "The Daily Worker" and his growth as a world player - finally ending with the deepest question asked throughout the entire video "Who where you?".

I don't want to give too much of the video away, and I can't talk too much about it without giving something away. That said I do want to talk as a whole, the transitions were gorgeous and entertaining, I didnt see a single flaw between each scene and they flowed almost magically. The actors chosen were very good, and I enjoyed the performance but the short was shot and directed by the actual Dough Karr and the question arises "Why the hell weren't you in a movie that follows you?" That was the only problem I saw with the short.

I don't believe that we have started any form of a rating system - they seem cliche to me. But I do want to give this short my thumbs up and suggest that if you have not clicked the link at the top yet, that you do so soon . . . do it now. . . . watch the video.

Alice! Where did your skin go?

Note: This first segment is about the prequel to Madness Returns in order to catch people up to speed with the story so far. If you wish to skip ahead to the actual review, scroll until after the dotted line and start reading from there.

American McGee is a man of many twisted tales; what else would you expect from one of the designers behind the first two Doom and Quake games. After finishing his work on the four id games, American transferred over to Electronic Arts studios and became the creative director of his own, twisted child: American McGee's Alice. Released in 1998 on the PC, the game was to take place after the books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and star Alice in the disturbing role of a criminally insane patient.

After accidentally burning down her house and killing her family, Alice floats through life, an empty shell of a person, letting her dark and twisted thoughts take hold of her body; this, ultimately, leads to her institutionalization into the Rutledge Asylum. After spending so much time at Rutledge, Alice's mind slowly takes over her body and her corruption overpowers her last shred of sanity, sending her into a Wonderland she no longer recognizes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will refrain from telling you the rest of the story as the game comes free with the purchase of it's successor: Alice: Madness Returns. If the game is bought on the 360 or PS3, you get a redeeming code to download it off of Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network, if you buy the game on PC, it installs into your program files folder right next to the "Alice2" directory. How nice of EA. Regardless of whether the free prize you get with the purchase is worth it or not, is the game you're actually paying for, Alice: Madness Returns, worth it? Find out after the Jump.

Starcraft 2: The WoW killer.

I have been playing Starcraft since early 2000 and World of Warcraft since, whenever BC came out. Both are great games and have a replay value of forever... or so I thought. Turns out, WoW can get boring after playing hardcore for 4 years or so. But Starcraft, much like other PvP games (Yes I know WoW has PvP but PvP takes a shit ton of time and friends to get into.) I can't get enough of. I've been playing starcraft 2 quite literally, as much as I used to Play WoW, and I still suck, but I don't care. Of course as any WoW player knows, the itch comes back in like a month after you cancel your subscription. So i'll be back in azeroth soon to down Ragnaros once I finish this epic Terran v Terran stalemate cause seigetanks and valkeries.

tl;dr

I quit WoW for SC2

This of course is to prelude the release of Heart of the Swarm.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

Don't you love Friday updates?

I remember when this game first came out in 1998; carrying something as big as the Legend of Zelda on something as small as a GameBoy seemed like magic at the time, where did Nintendo shove all the memory into the cartridge? Unfortunatley for me, all my friends got it around the time of its release while I had to wait until next year to get the game. After the long wait was over, I finally got my hands on the latest edition to the Legend of Zelda series: Link's Awakening. Just after recieving it as a gift, I placed all my others games I was constantly playing at the time (on my GameBoy Pocket, to be exact) on the shelf to gather dust. Sounds like cruel fate doesn't it? Don't worry, one of those games was Pokemon, which took up more than enough of my time already and needed to be shevled for a good three months. Funnily enough, the gift I got ended up being the original Link's Awakening (which was released in 1993 for the original GameBoy). This meant that, instead of saving up to buy the more expensive version of the same game that was in color that I couldn't see on my GameBoy Pocket, I could have simply bought the cheaper version and gotten the same results; but, because I was so patient, I ended up recieving the game for free when I went to visit my Grandma, many blessings upon her.
Its has been over ten years since I played that game and Nintendo has just rereleased it for sale on the Nintendo e-Shop for Zelda fans to purchase... again. Please note that this game is a rerelease of the GameBoy Color edition, this means that the game hasn't been updated from its 8-Bit (colored) graphics and sound; and that it just the way I like it. Oh! Daisy - Super Mario Land VC Review

Super Mario Land was Nintendo's first Game Boy game featuring their famous plumber, Mario. Forgoing the conventional adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom, Land takes place in Sarasaland, where an alien named Tatanga has kidnapped Princess Daisy. What's that? Princesses in need of rescue? Letsa go.

If you can actually read these words, chances are you're familiar with Mario platforming. Running, jumping on enemies, and throwing superballs (this game's Fire Flower turns you into Superball Mario strangely enough), you navigate your way through stages filled with enemies, bottomless pits and item boxes. This game can be pretty unforgiving at times with it's placements, but ultimately this makes level completion more satisfying. Read more after the jump.

3DS vs PSVita

So for the first time in the history of portable gaming both competing portable systems are at the same price point $249.99. This begs the question, which handheld is right for you? This normally would involve a lot of research and work. To make things easier, we here at ForThePlot have decided to do this work for you. See the comparison and recommendation after the jump.

GamersGate: An ad based solution for pc gaming

E3: GamersGate announces ad-supported FreeGames service photo

GamersGate is an ad based gaming service for Window's PCs and Mac. We haven't heard much about the product but we are assuming that this means that you will view an ad and then be able to play a game. I really hope that the ads don't appear in the middle of playing a game like during hulu's videos. I think a good place for ads would be loading screens. According to GamersGate most of the ad based profits will go straight to the game studio. This sounds good especially to an aspiring game developer like myself.

But what are they trying to do with this? Of course the first thing that comes to mind is video game piracy. This is the market they are trying to get. They will have to get some big titles on this new service that people would usually pirate instead of buy. Facebook style games will not get people to use the service. We will have to see more about it when it gets released in mid June. Until then we will keep you posted.

Arcana Heart 3 Review

June 1st was a good day. After waiting for over a month, the Playstation Store came back online, and I could finally obtain a copy of Arcana Heart 3. The game was originally released on April 19th, with the PSN outage coming soon thereafter. I’m happy to say that it was well worth the wait. Arcana Heart 3 is a hectic fighter, filled to the brim with fighting goodness for fans of the genre. Read more after the jump.

3DS Shop Update

On the evening of June 6th, Nintendo’s long promised eShop for the 3DS landed. It was packed with a new System Update.

Early adopters for the handheld’s update can download a free copy of Nintendo’s 3D Classics: Excitebike. The offer is only available until July 7th for US players. No word on if the game will be disabled after that date, much like the previously provided Ok Go video.

Available on the eShop out of the box is a collection of DSiWare games, as well as a small selection of Virtual Console titles (3 Game Boy titles, including Super Mario Land). Also released is Pokedex 3D, which appropriately enough, is a 3D Pokedex.
As of this afternoon (June 7th), Nintendo has released 3D trailers of its games presented at E3, as well as The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX for the Virtual Console, to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the series.

The presentation on the service is attractive, and largely effective. Upon starting the service, players can opt to register their device to a Club Nintendo account. The front page carries links to all needed options, including adding funds, new titles, and even a few flavor categories. Currently, one option is “Games That Start With W”.

It’s hard to give the service a solid review until we see more on how Nintendo chooses to support the service. However, if they can maintain a good update schedule, Nintendo has a great new tool on hand for distribution.

The Wii U: Nuff Said

The Wii U has finally been announced by Nintendo today, blowing my PSV coverage out of the water and into someone else's hands; you may say it sucks for them but I don't care, I'm the Nintendo Fanboy here. For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past.... hour or so, the Wii U is Nintendo's new console, pictured above, that has raised the bar in gaming. What makes this console so special? Perhaps it's the graphical upgrade to 1080P graphics? (Although specs for the console aren't available yet, it is rumored to be of the ATI r700 series however.) Maybe it's new online experience that Nintendo promises to deliver, or maybe its the way you play the games?

YES, like the Wii before it, the Wii U has completely changed the way you will play games on the console. How so? With its new controller! What's different about the controller this time? How about the fact that it looks like an iPad!
This is Nintendo's Future of Gaming
The Wii U has some serious potential behind it, but the details are limited so I'm just going to list them out to keep things short and sweet:
  • 1080p support (no guaranteed specs though)
  • 6 inch touch screen on the controller (SD)
  • L and R buttons on top with two Z buttons on the back of the controller
  • Camera on the top of the controller
  • Backward compatible with Wii games and Wii controllers
  • Wii U controller can continue gameplay while away from the console
  • Accelerometer in the controller
  • Better online experience and play
  • No DVD or Blu-ray support
  • A SERIOUS LINEUP OF THIRD PARTY GAMES (Arkham City, Battlefield 3, Darkstalkers 2)
  • Some promise in the first party lineup (Smash Bros. talked about but not shown)
  • Projected 2012 release
  • No price point... yet
And to finish off this short update on the Wii U, here is the tech demo, powered by the Wii U, taken from the Nintendo Conference (courtesy of IGN). Enjoi.

Dead or Alive: Dimensions Review

If you really wanted a single player fighter on the 3DS, well, here's your shot. Dead or Alive: Dimensions is the 5th fighting installment of the series, while it doesn't really bring much brand new to the table, the enhancements over the rest of the series definitely makes it worth consideration. Microsoft: We haven't stopped trying yet.

Dear reader,

Waking up early at 8A.M EST to watch the Microsoft E3 conference only to realize that I'm not on PST was a disappointment in and of itself. But the conference self was a whole different ball game of sorts. They first started off with the latest installment of the Call of Duty franchise Modern Warfare 3. The latest rehash of bloody screen effects and macho man psychology. Albeit I rather enjoyed running around war torn, Russian invaded suburban cities in MW2 the
multiplayer paled in comparison to CoD4's gameplay experience which ultimately lead me to not purchase a copy of Black Ops itself but rather partake in an "Extended Full Demo" of the Nazi Zombies mode.
Where would a Microsoft E3 conference be without Halo? Nowhere, this year Microsoft announced Halo Anniversary and Halo 4, Halo Anniversary being a retextured Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 4 being the start of a new Halo trilogy. I guess we have to finish the fight... again. The rest of the conference went like this
"KinectKinectKinectKinectKinectKinectKinectKinectKinectGamingexperienceKinectKinectKinectKinectKinect
KinectDisneylandKinectKinectKinectKinectKinect..."
And that's all I have to say about that.

Temporary Logo

Dear concerned reader,

Do not be alarmed, the fine logo you see above is merely a placeholder for the more extravagant logo to come. It is not far off from the final design though. MS Comic Sans is a must. Maybe i'll throw the text through a bolding a italicizing, GENIOUS! Be waiting for my future masterpieces.

Sony E3 Conference: Worth the Wait

Yesterday was an interesting day to say the least; not only did we witness the fall of an industry giant (I'm not going to point out any names but it rhymes with Shmicrosmoft) into the realm of mediocrity, but we also got to witness, debatably, one of the best E3 conferences of all time, and it was held by Sony, whodathunkit?
Starting off with a couple of presentations focusing on the Move, I have to admit I wasn't the least bit interested in most of what Sony was interested in offering at the time; until I saw Medieval Moves. This game seemed to take a step in the right direction for the Move; by signaling several different gestures, you can select different weapons from your arsenal to use to attack onslaughts of enemies. By simply lowering the Move controller and flipping your wrist, your character will throw "throwing stars" at the enemy (although why these exist in a Medieval game are beyond me). Moving the controller behind your head simulates the action of pulling an arrow out of the quiver on your character's back and will result in equipping the bow which makes for a slower, but more powerful, projectile. And, finally, flailing the sword like a manic idiot is how to use your sword while raising the move controller into a upwards, raised position is how to utilize your shield. Overall, the game appeared to be in an "on-rails shooter" format; you don't have any control over which direction the character moves in, but you control what weapons he uses and where he aims his weapons. There also appear to be a few puzzles thrown into the game (some reliant on timing), but it's nothing that would stump anyone above a first grade level, at least for very long. Long story short: the game has quite some promise... for a Move title that is.
There were also several announcements for Move and none-Move games at the conference as well. Naughty Dog showed a recent demo and new trailer for Uncharted 3 which hardley moved me from my seat since it seemed to be one of those games I would file under "New Locations! Same Game." But, for the sake of everyone else out there who is actually looking forward to the game: here is a trailer for your entertainment (horrible encoding ensured).

Along with Uncharted 3, other Tripple A titles were announced for the Playstation 3 such as a new Sly Cooper,

Resistance 3, Bioshock Infinite (now with Move support), Dust 514 (a shooter that is to be linked in with the EVE online game on the PC), and exclusive content that not even the 360 will be getting for games that are coming out with multi-platform releases. What do I mean by that? For examples: the new game Need For Speed: Run, which features not only driving gameplay, but gameply where you will have to run away from the cops on foot, will also have exclusive cars on the PS3 version; along with an extra game thrown into Battlefield 3 for PlayStation 3 users labled Battlefield 1943. Its finally seems like developers are taking full advantage of the capacity of a BluRay disc.
But we all really know what this blog post was about right? The big news of the Sony Conference of E3 2011 right? Their new, awesome ass, TV that Sony announced! Ok, this isn't the big news of the show, but it does have three nifty features about it that I would like to point out before moving on to the BIG news of the show. The first being just the look of the TV, isn't it just beautiful? Ok, thats not a real feature... moving on.
The TV displays in 3D and is only 24" big, making it the perfect display for people who don't have the luxury of living in bedrooms as big as their living room and want 3D gaming on their desk. I'm not one of those people, personally, but this next feature is the real kicker. Hold on to your balls, this is where the shit gets real.
The TV utilizes it's 3D feature to the best of its ability by giving two people who may be playing a split-screen game a full screen to play their game on... EACH.... WITH ONE TV! Now how does that work? The way that 3D glasses work are that each lense recieves a different signal from the TV in order to create a 3D effect in your eyes. "The Left lense will recieve a "left signal" from the TV and the Right lense will recieve a "right signal" from the TV, each showing a different perspective of the game world and, thus, giving off the illusion that it's in 3D (disclaimer: this isn't exactly how the 3D works, just a rough outline for those out there who don't speek geek). These two lenses, however, have been given the capability to recieve images from either both the left signal from the TV or the right signal from the TV. This mean, when playing a splitscreen game, both the images are displayed at once, covering the same area of the TV, but, by wearing the correct glasses, you will only be able to see one of those images instead of both of them at the same time (as simulated in the picture above). And yes, this does get rid of the 3D capability of the TV when playing split screen, but that means it also gets rid of the fear of someone screen peaking and killing you all the time; I feel that this outcome is far much more desired than sharing a smaller portion of the screen with the friend.
While that may not have been the biggest new of the show, that still a damn cool TV... right?
The real show stopper, however is something much bigger than this TV. What is it, you ask? Well chances are that if you found this website then you know what the product is. Stay tuned later today for a full overview of the Sony Playstation Vita.
Regards,
Bortch
